The instructor's own IMSAFE: why CFI fatigue never gets logged

Every student briefs IMSAFE before a lesson. Nobody briefs the Certified Flight Instructor running lesson six of the day. Here is what the regulations actually limit, what they leave wide open, and what a lean Kenyan flying school should do about it.

Walk into any Wilson Airport briefing room and you will see a student running through IMSAFE before a lesson. Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, Emotion, all checked, all signed off in some form.

Nobody in that room is checking the instructor. The Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) sitting across the table has usually flown three lessons already that morning, will fly three more before dark, and answers to nobody's checklist but their own memory.

The Short Version

  • Regulations that cap instructional flight time, such as the 8-hour rule under US 14 CFR 61.195(a), limit hours of flight training. They do not require rest afterwards.
  • Instructing is not the same fatigue load as flying. An instructor runs two flights at once, their own and the recovery from whatever the student is about to do wrong.

What the 8-hour rule actually limits

The clearest instructor-specific fatigue rule in general aviation training comes from the United States, whose Part 61 and Part 141 training standards have shaped flight-training culture worldwide, Kenya included. 14 CFR 61.195(a) states it plainly: in any 24 consecutive hours, a flight instructor may not conduct more than 8 hours of flight training.

Read that rule closely and notice what it does not say. It caps hours spent actually giving flight instruction in the air.

It says nothing about the ground briefing before each flight, the debrief after, the paperwork, the second job many instructors hold, or the rest period before the next day starts. An instructor can legally log 8 hours of flight training and still have put in a 12 or 14-hour working day around it, then be back at the same aerodrome before sunrise.

Compare that to how airline crews are regulated. Commercial air transport crews fly under prescriptive flight and duty time schemes built specifically to prevent cumulative fatigue across a duty period, not just to cap flying hours in isolation.

Instructional flying, by contrast, generally sits outside that kind of duty-time regime everywhere it is practised, precisely because flying clubs and schools are treated differently from commercial air transport operations. The flight-hour cap exists, but the duty-time twin does not, unless a school builds one itself.

Instructing is a different fatigue load, not a smaller one

It is tempting to assume an instructor sitting in the right seat, not doing the flying, is working less hard than the student. The opposite is usually true.

A student flies one aircraft. An instructor is mentally flying two: the aircraft as it actually is, and the aircraft as it is about to be if the student's next control input goes uncorrected.

That second, predictive flight runs continuously, lesson after lesson. It is the part that never gets a break even when the instructor's hands are off the controls.

Add the parts of the job that are unique to teaching. Constant verbal instruction and radio work strain the voice and attention differently to solo flying.

Circuit after circuit of the same pattern, watched for the same handful of student errors, is repetitive in a way that dulls vigilance even as it demands vigilance. A hot, un-airconditioned trainer cockpit at midday adds a physical fatigue layer most instructors fly straight through because the schedule does not leave room to stop.

A 2023 peer-reviewed narrative review of stress and workload research in aviation, published in Sensors, names fatigue alongside stress, mental workload, distraction, and situational unawareness as established human-factors causes of aviation error. None of that literature is written with instructors specifically in mind, because most aviation fatigue research targets airline crews.

That is exactly the gap. The group flying the most repetitive, most vigilance-heavy hours in general aviation is the group with the least fatigue research aimed at them.

The Kenyan training day concentrates the risk

Kenyan flight training runs on a shape that multiplies this problem rather than diluting it.

One long day, not several short ones

Near the equator, daylight runs from roughly 6:30am to 6:30pm all year with little seasonal variation. A Wilson Airport school with two or three instructors can and often does schedule flying across the whole of that window, because the light allows it and the demand for slots is there.

Few instructors carrying the whole roster

Many Kenyan flying schools are lean operations. Two or three instructors covering every student on the books is common, which means the fatigue load of a full flying day lands on a small number of people rather than being spread across a large instructor pool the way it might be at a bigger flight school elsewhere.

The instructor is also the standard

A tired student who makes a shaky landing gets corrected. A tired instructor who lets a shaky landing go uncorrected, or corrects it a half-second late, has nobody checking their work in that moment.

The instructor is the quality control on that flight. Quality control that is itself degraded does not flag its own degradation.

When instructor judgement fails, the record is public

Instructor error is not a hypothetical. In September 2023, a Piper PA-28-161 on a night training flight out of Owensboro, Kentucky broke apart in the air after flying into a known area of severe thunderstorms, killing the instructor and the student.

The NTSB's final report, covered in detail by Flying Magazine, found the probable cause was the instructor's improper decision to continue into weather. The instructor's own pre-flight briefing had already flagged an active convective SIGMET, with cloud tops to 42,000 feet and hail over an inch across.

That accident was a weather-judgement failure, not a confirmed fatigue case, and it would be dishonest to label it otherwise. What it demonstrates is broader and just as important: the instructor is the last line of defence on a training flight, and when that line fails, there is no second line behind it.

Fatigue is one of several things that can degrade an instructor's judgement at exactly the moment a decision like that gets made. It rarely announces itself.

It just quietly narrows the margin between a decision an instructor would make sharp and one they make eight lessons into a long day.

Self-assessment fails the same way it does for students

The FAA's fatigue education material, written primarily for airline crews but physiologically accurate for anyone, makes a point worth repeating for instructors specifically. Advisory Circular 120-100 notes that fatigue degrades the ability to notice how degraded you are, and that tired people reliably rate their own impairment as lower than it measures.

Apply that to an instructor and the trap is sharper than it is for a student. A tired student under-rating their own fatigue is a risk to themselves and their aircraft on that flight.

The FAA's fitness-for-duty guidance in AC 117-3 pushes crews toward factual self-checks rather than a vague feeling of being fine: hours actually slept, hours awake, consecutive short nights, any microsleeps noticed. There is no reason those questions work any less well for an instructor than for the student sitting next to them.

What a responsible small school actually does

None of this requires a big operation or an expensive fatigue management system. It requires a school that treats the flight-hour cap as a floor, not a target.

  • Set a real duty-time limit, not just a flight-hour limit. Decide, on paper, how many total hours an instructor can be rostered in a day, including briefings, ground time, and admin, and stick to it even when demand is high.
  • Rotate lesson types across a long day. Circuits and pattern work are more vigilance-draining than a cross-country briefing session. Stacking the most repetitive lessons back to back compounds fatigue faster than mixing the day up.
  • Give instructors the same permission students get. A student can downgrade or scrub a lesson when a fatigue check fails. An instructor should have that same option without it costing them the day's pay or the school's goodwill.
  • Watch the pattern, not just the day. A head of training who reviews a few weeks of rosters will see the instructor who is always scheduled dawn to dusk, every day, long before that instructor volunteers it.
  • Protect the last lesson of the day deliberately. The final slot of a long roster is the one most likely to be flown by the most fatigued instructor on site. Treat it as a fact to manage, not a coincidence.

What instructors say when nobody official is asking

Flight instructor forums carry a consistent undertone once the conversation turns to workload. Few instructors describe fatigue as a single dramatic event.

The far more common admission is quieter: a debrief that ran shorter than it should have because the instructor was out of patience by lesson four, a radio call read back wrong near the end of a long day, a landing correction made a beat later than it would have been that morning. The pattern that shows up again and again is not collapse.

It is a slow erosion of the margin an instructor would insist a student maintain, applied to the instructor's own performance instead.

That erosion is exactly why fatigue is dangerous precisely where it is least visible: in the small, uncorrected slips of an experienced person who still believes, honestly, that they are fine.
